SBM Report: Nigerians No Fit Cook Jollof Again As A Pot Don Reach N28K

One new report from SBM Intelligence don show say e no dey easy again for Naija people to cook simple Jollof rice. Di price don rise like breeze, and now, to cook one pot of Jollof rice for Nigeria go cost you around N27,528.

Wetin shock pass be say, for some places like Bauchi, one pot don cost reach N41,050 – all this na because of wahala wey dey affect our market, our farms, our roads, and our economy.

Di report, wey dem call The Jollof Index – Q2 2025, say food inflation for Nigeria don increase by 153% since March 2023. SBM say this kain price hike dey cause gobe for families wey salary no even fit cover food for one week.

Dem say Naija food inflation no dey follow normal inflation again. Even if fuel or transport price calm down small, food still dey go up. Pepper, oil, onion, rice – all of dem don turn gold.

According to the report, the big problems wey dey push food price up include:

  • Fuel subsidy removal – na wetin make transport price mad.

  • Naira collapse – everything wey we dey import don cost.

  • Bandits & insecurity – farmers no fit go farm again.

  • Bad roads & rain wahala – food no dey move well again.

Na every corner dem dey shout:

  • Turkey (1kg) for Bauchi jump from N10,000 to N15,000

  • Onions for same place move from N500 to N2,000

  • Pepper don go from N1,500 to N8,000

One caterer for Lagos talk say:

“To price food for client now na fight. If you give price today, tomorrow market go don change.”

She even talk say she dey cut big yam to small pieces to sell, or dey buy egg instead of meat because money no reach again.
 

SBM dey beg policymakers make dem:

  • Secure farmers and their lands.

  • Repair road dem.

  • Allow food import for now to balance supply.

  • Support local farmers through co-operative and bulk buying.

From Lagos to Calabar, from Abuja to Bauchi, people dey struggle to put food for pot.

“Jollof rice wey dem dey use celebrate, don become luxury,” the report talk.
