Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, don talk say di protests wey turn violent for Ekpoma last week no be spontaneous wahala from people, na well-planned riot wey get money from abroad.

Speaking to reporters, the governor said intelligence reports indicated that the unrest—initially triggered by concerns over local insecurity and the killing of a young man—was “bankrolled from abroad,” naming a Nigerian resident in Russia and other overseas locations as sources of funding.

Okpebholo said security briefings revealed plans for synchronised attacks not only in Ekpoma but also in Auchi, Irrua, and even around the Government House in Benin City, suggesting a broader attempt to destabilise the state.

The protest later degenerated into violence, with videos circulating online showing looting, arson, and destruction of property. Local media reported that hoodlums attacked sections of the Onojie of Ekpoma’s palace, disrupted activities at a livestock market, and set properties ablaze—acts the governor described as criminal and unacceptable.

State authorities said the violence was used as a cover for criminal activities rather than a peaceful demonstration. Security agencies have since intensified efforts to identify, track, and arrest those involved.

According to the Edo State Government, investigators have traced financial links to members of the Nigerian diaspora and identified suspected masterminds who allegedly coordinated actions across Ekpoma and other towns.

Police and other security operatives have arrested several suspects, while investigations remain ongoing. The government has urged residents to remain calm and assured the public that all suspects will be treated humanely and prosecuted only where evidence supports legal action.

However, some residents and civil society groups have cautioned against premature conclusions, calling for transparency and the public release of evidence to avoid politicising the unrest.

As investigations continue, Edo officials said findings will be made public and warned residents against sharing unverified videos or claims that could further inflame tensions in the state.
