CAPPA, Medical Experts Don Call for Stronger Control on Sugar Drinks for Naija

Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) don launch documentary wey dey warn say sugar drink dey drive serious health and environmental wahala for Nigeria.

The documentary, Sweet Poison, wey dem screen for Lagos, show how sugar-sweetened drinks dey linked to increase for diabetes, obesity, and other non-communicable sicknesses wey dey affect many Nigerians.

CAPPA Executive Director Akinbode Oluwafemi talk say Nigeria need strong policy and tax system to reduce how people dey consume sugary drinks.

“We need stronger taxes on sugar-sweetened beverages to reduce diabetes and obesity,” Oluwafemi talk. “The current system no strong reach to handle the level of the problem.”

Him also raise alarm on environmental matter, say plastic waste from drink packaging dey worsen pollution for communities.

“The impact no be only health issue, e also be environmental problem,” him add.

The Global Health Advocacy Incubator Regional Senior Advisor for Africa, Adeolu Adebiyi, talk say the matter get both health and environmental side.

“This na both public health and environmental challenge,” Adebiyi talk.

Medical experts also support say government need tighten regulation.

Chairman of Lagos chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association, Babajide Saheed Babajide Kehinde warn say too much sugar fit cause serious health problems.

“E fit lead to blindness, heart disease, amputations and other complications,” Saheed talk. “We no dey say make people no take sugar at all, but make dem reduce am. Moderation na the key.”

Him add say government suppose act quick to reduce risk, especially for people wey dey prone to diabetes.
