Nigeria Govt Suspend Sachet Alcohol Ban, Say Make Dem Review Am First

Federal Government don direct make dem suspend immediately all enforcement actions wey concern the proposed ban on sachet alcohol and 200ml PET-bottled alcoholic drinks, pending further consultation and final policy decision.

According to statement wey Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF) release on Monday, the suspension follow letter wey House of Representatives Committee on Food and Drugs Administration and Control send. The committee raise concern about how National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) plan take enforce the ban.

The letter, wey carry date November 13, 2025, get signature of the Deputy Chairman of the committee, Hon. Uchenna Harris Okonkwo. The OSGF talk say the lawmakers flag issues about the timing and possible effects of the ban.

The Federal Government say all decisions, actions and enforcement measures wey link to the proposed ban must stop until consultation finish and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation issue final directive. Any enforcement wey happen without proper clearance no get validity and the public suppose disregard am.

Government talk say dem go carefully review resolutions from lawmakers, economic implications, public health concerns and other national interests to make sure say the final decision balance well and follow the law.

NAFDAC bin earlier plan to start full enforcement of the ban on production, distribution and sale of sachet alcohol and small PET bottle drinks by end of December 2025, say na because of public health and safety reasons.

But the plan cause pushback from lawmakers and industry stakeholders, wey question the timing of the ban, the economic effect and how dem wan take implement am.

The suspension come as discussion still dey go on about whether the policy go really help public health or cause more harm to the economy, employment and coordination between government agencies and the National Assembly.
