The Department of State Services (DSS) has summoned activist Omoyele Sowore over what it described as a “false and malicious” social media post against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a letter dated September 7 and signed by Uwem Davies on behalf of the Director-General, the DSS accused Sowore of calling Tinubu a “criminal” in an August 26 post on X, formerly Twitter.
The agency described the remarks as derogatory and capable of inciting public disturbance. It directed Sowore to retract the post on X, publish a public apology in two national newspapers and two television stations, and make a formal representation to its Abuja headquarters within one week.
The letter, copied to the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, warned that failure to comply would attract “lawful action.”
“Persons of your status who are campaigning to lead this country must exercise restraint and responsibility in their speech,” the DSS said.
The Service reaffirmed its commitment to tackling misinformation and safeguarding national unity.
