The big-war inside Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) don enta another level as the Supreme Court today, April 30, 2026, don "nullify" (cancel) the National Convention wey the party do for Ibadan for November 2025.
The matter no be small thing as the Supreme Court judges no gree for theirselves—the judgment na 3-2 split decision. Three judges say the convention no follow law, while two judges get different mind. But at the end of the day, the majority win: the Ibadan Convention don void!
The Supreme Court talk say dem support wetin the Federal High Court and Court of Appeal bin talk before. The court vex say the PDP faction wey Tanimu Turaki dey lead use "strong-head" go do convention for Ibadan on November 15 and 16, 2025, even when court bin don give order say make dem wait.
The Justices describe the move as "affront to the rule of law"—meaning say the party try to show say dem big pass the law. Because dem disobey the order wey stop the then-acting Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, from doing the convention, the court say everything wey comot from that meeting na "null and void."
This judgment don "kpanshi" the chairmanship of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki and the whole National Working Committee (NWC) wey that convention produce. As it stand now:
-
No Leader: The party leadership structure don enter "one-chance" as there is no recognized NWC for now.
-
INEC Levels: The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) no fit recognize anything wey comot from that Ibadan meeting again.
-
2027 Tension: With 2027 election for front, this judgment don put big "G-Wagon" inside PDP plan, as the party go need find way to settle their warring factions or do fresh convention.
For a long time now, PDP don dey boil. Factions, governors, and big stakeholders dey drag power, dey accuse each other of "illegal substitution" and breaking party rules. This Supreme Court ruling na the latest judicial blow to the party's attempt to fix their house through that Ibadan convention.
Analysts say the party fit need to go back to the drawing board to negotiate, or else, the road to 2027 go hard well-well.
