Federal Govt Sign New Deal With University Lecturers, Approve Extra Pay for Professors
Federal Government don sign one major agreement with university lecturers to improve their salary and working conditions, as part of effort to end years of strikes and school shutdown for Nigeria higher education system.
One major highlight of the agreement na introduction of “Professorial Credit Allowance”, wey be extra money for senior lecturers like Professors and Readers, to appreciate their workload and contribution.
Under the new plan, full-time Professors go receive extra ₦1.8 million every year, wey mean about ₦140,000 extra every month.
For Readers (rank wey dey just below Professor), dem go get extra ₦840,000 per year, about ₦70,000 monthly.
Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Maruf Alausa, explain say the allowance na strictly for full-time academic staff, no be part-time lecturers.
According to am,
“This approval recognise the heavy teaching, research, administrative and service work wey senior academics dey carry.”
The allowance go help lecturers handle research coordination, academic documentation, official correspondence and administrative duties better, so dem fit focus more on teaching, mentorship and innovation.
Federal Government also confirm say National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission issue official circular for full implementation on December 30, 2025, and the allowance go take effect from January 1, 2026.
Dr Alausa praise ASUU for joining hands with government to sign the agreement, and also commend President Bola Tinubu for strong leadership and commitment to education. He add say the agreement don finally settle a dispute wey don last for more than 20 years.
