ASUU Dey Warm Up for Fresh Strike! Say FG Dey ‘Draw Leg’ to Implement 2025 Agreement

The peace wey public universities for Nigeria are enjoying fit soon "otilo" as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Jos branch, raise alarm today, Monday, May 25, 2026, say another heavy strike dey load.

The union warn say the Federal Government dey use "slow-motion" and "wuru-wuru" take implement the agreement dem two sign together on December 23, 2025.

According to ASUU, the National Executive Council (NEC) bin meet for Modibbo Adama University between May 9 and 10, 2026, to check the government score-card, and the result na total "F." Dem say the frustration among lecturers don over-choke.

ASUU vex say the Federal Government refuse to set up the Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC) wey suppose supervise the agreement. Because of this, the government don dey do "select-and-apply" for their salary and allowances.

The union list the things wey still dey hang to include:

  • Selective Allowances: The Consolidated Academic Tool Allowance (CATA), Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), and Professorial Allowance never set correctly.

  • Withheld Salaries: The money wey government hold during the 2022 strike under the "no work, no pay" rule. ASUU say that rule no clear because lecturers still dey do research and community work even when class no hold.

  • Arrears: The outstanding 25% and 35% wage award, promotion arrears, and third-party deductions wey IPPIS clear but no remit.

Though ASUU hail Sa’adu Zungur University and Ekiti State University for trying to pay some parts of the agreement, dem warn say other schools must wake up before the whole country catch fire.

Apart from money matter, ASUU also enter the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, with heavy tackle.

Dem criticize the new National Research and Innovation Development Fund (NRIDF) wey the Minister announce, especially as the funding dey come in US Dollars. ASUU say this one na "neo-colonialism" wey go give foreign entities power over Nigeria's education.

Other things wey make ASUU vex na:

  • Coventry University Twinning: The plan to bring foreign university models (like Coventry University) enter Naija, wey dem say no go help local standards.

  • New Professor Titles: The introduction of titles like "Professor of Practice" and "Diaspora Professor," wey dem say dey destroy university autonomy.

  • Mother-Tongue Reversal: The decision to drop the local language instruction policy for small pikins.

  • Course Scrapping: The plan by government to delete some courses from universities, insisting say every discipline get value for national growth.

To wrap the matter up, ASUU say dem no dey live for Jupiter, as dem dey feel the heavy economic hardship, hunger, and security wahala wey dey rock Nigeria as the 2027 general elections dey draw near. Dem warn say the "insensitivity" of the government towards lecturers and the public dey build up one kind "pent-up anger" wey fit burst face anytime soon.
