
Federal Government don talk say dem no go dey import fish again as dem don ready to boost local production and support young people and women wey wan enter fish farming.
Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, talk this one for Abuja on Wednesday during meeting with some Fisheries Cooperative Groups.
According to am, the government wan use aquaculture (fish farming) take help Nigeria get food, create jobs, and even start to export fish give other countries.
“We no go continue dey import fish. We gats produce our own. Government go support fish farmers with good policy, training, and money,” Oyetola talk.
He say say the Federal Government don already start some programmes to empower youth and women, and dem go continue to expand am so more people fit benefit.
The minister also talk say dem dey plan with World Bank to get money support for local fish farmers and dey work with Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation (NAIC) to help fish farmers insure their business.
“We dey talk with Ministry of Water Resources to make the success wey we see for Oyan Dam fish project spread go other parts of the country,” Oyetola add.
He say this meeting na just the beginning, as government dey plan better long-term plan wey go involve different ministries to move the sector forward.
With this new direction, government hope say Nigeria go soon stop to depend on imported fish and instead go produce better, fresh fish wey go feed the people, create jobs and help grow the economy.
